Your work is very vibrant! I usually am not big on yellow, but Helga Hufflepuff's portrait is delightful. I need to learn how to put in patterns to enrich my work

Here's a good pattern tutorial. [link]

Although that's not how I do it, but it might make more sense than how I do it. What I do is I give my patter the "line" treatment, the way the lines are prepped in this tutorial. [link]

I do it a little differently. The technique I used on this painting makes the pattern all one color a first, but that makes it so I can color it however I want after the proper treatment. I'll write it down the best I can.

First of all, load your pattern onto a layer. I usually desaturate it so that it's a black pattern on a white background. Use your "adjustments" options. I tidy up things I don't want with a white paintbrush (so it's white on white, pretty much like erasing). If I use the actual erasor, the holes in the layer will show up as black in your pattern later on, so make sure there are NO HOLES in your layer. Nothing should be transparent.
After the pattern looks how you want it, you closely follow these steps.
1. Select the layer the pattern is on. Copy it. Don't deselect.
2. Go over to "Channels", create new layer (Alpha 1)
3. Paste
4. Go back to "Layers" create new layer
5. Go to "Select" at top of page, click on "Load selection"
6. Select "Alpha 1"
7. After that's done, go back to "Select" click on "Inverse"
8. Fill with color of your choice. (shortcut is "command, delete")
9. Deselect.
10. Lock the transparency! This is the little square box full of little grey squares in the "Layers" box. When you've locked the "line" (which is your pattern) you can color only the pattern without coloring your background. You can put a gradient on it, alter the transparency, all without affecting your background or base colors. Move and adjust the layer accordinly. If you want to erase parts of your pattern (which normally you need to so it looks right on clothes and such), you MUST unlock the layer. (It took me forever to figure this out :XD: ). Remember to lock it again when you want to paint your pattern some more.

Before I start erasing my pattern to fit the cloth or walls or whatever I'm painting, I make sure make a copy of it and store it on a layer for later. You can't imagine how many times that extra pattern layer has come in handy!

I hope this helped. It's so hard to explain photoshop to someone when you're not next to them with the photoshop screen in front of you. I'm not a great teacher or anything, so I hope you can make sense of my ramblings. :)
